Match Report
Under 12 Premier Division:
CHAMPIONS!
It has been an incredible year for the Firhouse Carmel U.12’s premier SDFL side. Some might say a rollercoaster ride but for managers dave and gary it was a season to remember.
When we were getting this side ready in August we had only 11 players at pre-season but come the first game the season we had a squad of 17 talented players that were rearing to go. We never thought at the start of the season that we would get to a cup final and win the league. As managers you set out your targets and ours was simple, to have a good league campaign and a good cup run.
During the season, not only did the lads play teams in their league, they came up against teams from Donegal, England and Austria and came out winners in all 3 games.
During the season we played some great games against league rivals, they were hard fought and the football on display was outstanding, a special goes to Cabinteely, Rangers AFC and Liffey Valley Rangers. The lads won the league by winning 14 games, drawing 2 and losing 2 and the biggest of all achievements was that we were unbeaten at home, in a very competitive league were all teams showed class and took points of each other. The league looked out of our reach in February, but our last 8 league games saw us win 7 and draw 1. In that period we had a great run in the cup that saw us reach the final and lose out to a strong Cabinteely side even though we looked on top for most of it.
As two young coaches, Dave 23 and Gary 19 it was a joy to work with the lads who showed great respect, commitment and effort over the season. These 3 simple things led to us having a season to remember, we finally would like to thank the parents who followed us all over and showed great support on and off the line.
A special mention goes to Linda Murphy who was with the lads since they were 7, this was for her.
Preparation and thought have already gone into next season with trials taking place on July 7th and pre season friendlies already being arranged.
U10 Division 1 Title Playoff -
Firhouse 3 Wayside Celtic 1
Wow! what can I say about this match. Everyone who was there will know how much it meant to the Team. After eight defeats against Wayside over the years a lot of which were narrow defeats, we go and take the title off them in what was an outstanding Team performance.
I got the feeling Wayside thought this game was a forgone conclusion after a 4-0 victory over Firhouse in the last match we played but right from the start there was only one team that wanted to win this game.Firhouse dominated early possesion with Adam Donaldson driving over the bar from the edge of the box and Kimolo hitting a stunning half volley from the corner of the box which the keeper could only touch over.
Firhouse took the lead from a corner by Craig which was headed passed the keeper by Callum for his 1st league goal, a deserved reward for an outstanding season in defence. Wayside had a few attacks which were dealt with brilliantly by Mikey, Callum and Dylan. Then close to the end of the half a long range effort was knocked on to the bar by Sean and followed up by a Wayside attacker 1-1. Did the heads go down, no way!
Firhouse were straight back at them with Adam Doherty going close with an overhead kick.
Second half was business as usual and Firhouse were rewarded when great work from Kimolo and Rober resulted in a cross from the later being knocked in to the box for Craig to knock home from close range. Wayside pressed for a few minutes and created one clear cut shot was brilliantly tipped around the post by Sean (who sacrificed his usual 10 minute run out to play the whole game in goal, Thanks Sean). That was the limit of Waysides efforts on goal and the game was finshed off in the latter stages when Craig (who was magnificent along with Avis) in the centre rounded a defender and finished brilliantly for his second. The added time seemed like an eternity but when the whistle came, personally its a moment I will never forget.
I am not picking a man of the match because the effort and determination of the whole Team makes it impossible. I just want to say a big thank you to all parents, relatives and commitee members who were at the match and contributed to a great atmosphere.
Finally a big Thank you to John Worth who is leaving us this year after managing the team from there beginings. Rob and myself have enjoyed working with him the last few seasons and it was nice to send him off with his biggest Title as a manger. Which ever Saturday team gets him will be very lucky.
