Eoin Doyle
Hibernian
Eoin Doyle stated playing his football with
Firhouse Carmel at under 8. Playing a year
ahead of his age group, under the guidance
of unlce & manager Alan Perkins, he won
honors at every age level in the SDFL up
to under 11. Following his move to Shelbourne,
Eoin stayed at under 11 this time playing in
the DDSL League...
Now 23 years old, Eoin scored 25 goals in the
Airtricity League of Ireland last season is Pat
Fenlon’s first signing since taking over as Hibs
boss. Doyle hopes to follow in the footsteps of
Anthony Stokes and make an impact up front
in the Scottish Premier League.
“Stokesy and I went to school together in south Dublin and hung around together as kids,” Doyle admitted. “We’re still pals and I’ll give him a bell next week and catch up again.
“We played up front together for the Shelbourne youth side from the age of 10 to 15 and even then he was a cut above the rest. I’ll never forget a game when we went 1-0 down and straight from kick-off he took a shot that swerved all the way to the opposition goal and gave us the equaliser.
“He has set a great career up for himself and is flying these days at Celtic. It’s something for me to aspire to and hopefully I’ll also grab a few headlines for scoring goals.”
The Fenlon connection was the main reason Doyle chose Hibs rather than other suitors who included Aberdeen and some nPower League clubs. “The gaffer called last weekend and asked me to come over and thankfully the deal was done,” Doyle told the club’s official website. “It’s a relief to get over the line and I’m looking forward to the challenges ahead. I’d heard of interest from one or two other clubs, but nothing concrete had materialised. I was only a day or two off re-signing for Sligo Rovers but my mind was set on a move to Hibs as soon as I received the call.
“It was never in my mind not to come over – after all the SPL is a better standard, I’ll be facing better opposition and in front of bigger crowds. I scored 25 times and it was a massive achievement because the previous record for a season in the League of Ireland was 20 goals. I proved my versatility last season as well because I played all across the middle, as well as up front – and even right-back and left-wing.
“As a footballer in Ireland it has always been my ambition to win a move across the water and I’m looking forward to the challenge. Hopefully, I will make my debut against Hearts and I’ll spend the next week or so trying to put in the equivalent of a mini pre-season programme.”
Pat Fenlon praised his new signing: “Eoin gives us a different dimension. He plays on the shoulder of defenders rather than being the type of striker to drop deep. His movement is very good and he can also play wide on the right or left. There is still a bit to work on, but he brings different attributes to the squad.
“We will only sign players who can improve us and Eoin won’t have any problems adapting to the SPL. He has played at a high level with Sligo Rovers and Shamrock Rovers, including Europe. We are in a position we have to move into markets where we can afford to buy and Ireland is one of them. Eoin may take a little time to settle and find his full match fitness but he’ll score goals here.”
Doyle will not be able to feature for Hibs until the January transfer window opens, and his first game could be in the Edinburgh derby against Hearts on January 2nd.
